History of ISKCON Dublin

Krishna Consciousness has been popular in Dublin for many years now. As Ireland's capital city, Dublin is a diverse and busy city and over the past few decades has had many temples. For one reason or another these temples never remained open for longer than a few years, mainly because the properties were not owned or secured by a long term leese agreement.

With the development of the Govinda's chain of vegetarian restaurant in the city a long term leese has been secured on the present temple building and thanks to the support of the restaurant devotees we now have a place we can call home. Sunday programmes have been taking place for the last few years in the Dublin temple every week at 3pm.

Over this space of time we have had a chance to develop a supportive community who have joined and worked with the core temple team to refine our vision of a thriving city centre temple with regular and varied Krishna Conscious programmes. We have also fundraised over €75,000 of the €90,000 that we estimate it will cost to complete the renovation of the present temple.

Although our Sunday programmes have been popular we are working on building a far more substantial centre with different rooms including the temple room, kitchens and a reception area. Thanks to the help of our many supporters the majority of this work has already been completed and we are now in the final stages of completing the wiring and decorating.

If you are interested in supporting the temple with your time then please either contact us by email or visit in person - you'll always find us there on Sundays from 3pm onwards. You can also donate whatever you can afford towards the fund to finish the renovations using the Paypal button below.

That's great news and it's good to see the amounts in order of contribution, in order to make a little 'transcendental competition', like Srila Prabhupada made reference to.

We've got 300 euro to bring to Dublin next time I'm there, for the new centre. Mind you, Champa and I have written cheques for 5180.65 euro in the past six months from Lake Isle Retreats for the Inisrath temple, with another 700 on the way in a few days.

(I'm going to sound a little preachy here - that's advance warning!!! - I'm also trying to get the message across to myself here......) I mean, why spend so much of ones income on housing, transport, clothing and food? Everybody in the world has spent on these since time immemorial anyway - although, of course, they're necessities. Still it's certainly not very spectacular if one spends all of ones cash on these things. If that's all we do, it's very ordinary (I'm guilty of this myself big-time)

Funnily enough, if you notice Cathedrals, temples and churches from centuries ago, as one example, sometimes it appears that people spent a greater proportion of their income towards their perception of God in the past then nowadays. Religious buildings and centres of worship nowadays seldom come anywhere near the magnificence of great religious architecture of the past.

And in Ireland, for example, in previous centuries people struggled a lot more to get food, clothing and a warm and dry place to live, yet those same people often gave generously from what they could for their Church. It's a changed world.

Thank you Prabhu - I agree completely with your sentiment. I know the reason I donate both my time and money to the project is because I know it is a real investment. What could be more glorious than building and running a temple to serve devotees of Lord Krsna?
